Now select sheepskins are tanned so that they are machine washable and can be disinfected, making them suitable and recommended for medical situations.  With the development of the Australian Medical Sheepskin AS4480.1, sheepskins are now used extensively for medical purposes to prevent pressure sores, bedsores and decubitus ulcers.
