Sheepskin & Wool Bedding

The right bedding depends on who sleeps in the bed. For everyday comfort, a wool underlay, duvet and pillow cover are enough. For someone who spends long hours in bed or is at risk of pressure sores, choose a dense sheepskin or Merino wool pad and let them lie directly on the wool.

Sheepskin bed pads and overlays (pressure care)

• Australian Medical Sheepskin Overlay (M102) and Australian Medical Sheepskin (M102C): AS4480.1 medical sheepskins, HiTemp wash and urine resistant. The M102C is 24" x 36", enough to cover the shoulders to below the buttocks.
• Healthcare Lambskin (M101): about 30" x 40" with a 30 mm champagne pile, washed in cool or lukewarm water. See lambskin bedding.

Merino wool fleece pads (machine wash and dry)

• Hospital Wool Fleece Bed Pad (F103C): 30" x 60", 1050 g/m² Merino wool, urine resistant.
• Superior Overlay XD (SC104XD) and Pressure Smart XD1900 Overlay (M102XD): more than 1900 g of Merino wool per square meter, in 30" x 60" and 26" x 40".
• Hospital Bed Nursing Fleece (F102): fits a standard hospital bed (35" x 80") with an elasticised skirt.

Underlays, duvets and pillow covers (everyday comfort)

• MiniJumbuk SuperWool Underlay (R215): a 100% wool fleece mattress topper with a 1.25" pile and a 45 cm stretch fitted skirt. Twin, Double, Queen and King; used under a fitted sheet.
• Wool Duvet (T215): New Zealand wool in breathable 200-count percale cotton. Twin to King.
• Wool Pillow Cover (M129D): fine Merino wool, 18" x 28", fits a queen pillow. Machine washable.

How to choose

1. Comfort or pressure care? Underlays and duvets are for a better night's sleep. For pressure sore prevention, choose a medical sheepskin or a dense Merino wool pad.
2. How much of the body? 24" x 36" to 26" x 40" pads cover the shoulders to below the buttocks; 30" x 60" pads cover the whole body.
3. Incontinence? Choose a urine-resistant pad (HiTemp UR sheepskins, F103C, SC104XD) and see incontinence bedding.
4. Washing: the pads, sheepskins, underlay and pillow cover are washable in Woolskin; the duvet is dry cleaned. Many caregivers keep two pads so one can be in the wash.

Frequently asked questions

Is sheepskin bedding good for bed sores?
A medical sheepskin or dense Merino wool pad reduces pressure, shear and moisture, the three main causes of pressure sores. It works best when the person lies directly on the wool. If a sore has already started, follow the nurse's advice.

Can wool bedding be washed?
Yes, except the duvet. Wash in Woolskin on a gentle or wool cycle and don't over-dry: wool does best with about 15% moisture left in it. HiTemp sheepskins can be washed in hot water.
