Incontinence Bedding: How to Set Up the Bed

Moisture and pressure together make skin break down faster. A wool pad tackles both: the deep pile spreads body weight, and the wool absorbs moisture and wicks it away from the skin. Choose a pad marked urine resistant, so it can be washed often without losing its properties.

Setting up the bed

  1. Protect the mattress with a waterproof sheet or a disposable "blue pad".
  2. Lay the wool pad on top, wool side up.
  3. Let the person lie directly on the wool. That gives the best protection, and the wool can absorb moisture away from the skin.
  4. Clean small spills with a damp cloth. Wash the pad when it becomes smelly, and keep a spare for wash days.

Washing

Wash in Woolskin, which cleans, conditions and disinfects the wool; household detergents can damage the leather of a sheepskin. Dry on low heat and take the pad out before it's fully dry: wool does best with about 15% moisture left in it. See washing and drying sheepskin.
